Flowers in When I see Grandma

  • Flowers are a key motif in the book. All of the flowers in the vase on the cover are on a page in the book. - some are easy to spot, others aren't as obvious. Can you find the flowers? (note: not all pages have a flower)

  • Can you name all the flowers on the cover of the book? (answer at the bottom of the page)

  • You can give flowers to someone you love - here are some ideas:

You could grow your own from seeds or seedlings.

Or you could make paper-cup and tissue-paper flowers by following the instructions and links below:

Making paper-cup flowers

Picture
Take one paper-cup
Picture
Using scissors cut a strip to within about 2-3cm of the bottom of the cup
Picture
Continue cutting strips at regular intervals all around the cup, always ending 2-3 cm from the bottom of the cup
Picture
Fold back the strips so they look like this
Picture
The finished flower
Picture
Colour the centre yellow, with a bright texta
Picture
Stick a paddle pop stick to the back using sticky tape or blue-tack

Patty pan flowers

Picture
You will need two different sized paper patty pans, one button and one pipe cleaner
Picture
Turn the patty pans inside out so that the colour is on the inside
Picture
Pierce a small hole in the centre of both patty pans
Picture
Thread the pipe cleaner up through the button and then down another hole, leaving a small amount of pipe cleaner poking out the other side
Picture
Thread the patty pans onto the open end of the pipe cleaner and up to the button, carefully passing both the stem and the end of the pipe cleaner through the hole until the button is flat on the patty pans
Picture
Press out the end of the pipe cleaner to secure the patty pans on the stem.

Making tissue-paper flowers

Picture
How to make this paper flower?

Picture
Then turn the stack of paper over and turn up the same again, making an opposite fold - this is called concertina or fan fold. Make sure the first and last folds are the same direction.

Picture
From the side, it should look like this.

Picture
One by one, do the same with each sheet of paper and it will look something like this.
Picture
Cut 10 squares of tissue paper about 13 cm each side (doesn't need to be exact - about this size was the best for me). Stack them on top of each other.

Picture
When it is folded all the way, put it so that the first fold line is at the top, and lay a pipe cleaner over the middle with about 3 cm over the edge.

Picture
On one side, gently loosen the top page of the paper stack, and bring it up and towards the centre.

Picture
Repeat with the other side, bringing each sheet into the centre, and adjusting it together as you go.
Picture
Fold up about 11/2 - 2 cm all along one side (the longer side if it is not quite square).

Picture
Twist pipe cleaner around the folded paper, without scrunching it too much.

Picture
Like this.

Picture
Voila! Who will you give your flower to?

Try snipping the ends when folded into pointy or round for a different look.
